TORN NAPKIN ART TILES DIY

This is one of those rare projects that I could do over and over and over again! It's easy and artistic and fun, fun, FUN! Even if you are not "crafty" this would be one for you to try.

I bet I could even wallpaper a wall with torn napkins! Just kidding... I'm done with wallpaper for a decade or so. I have wasted months of my life scraping wallpaper OFF walls!

Do you have a napkin addiction like I do? I cannot go past pretty paper napkins without getting them. I got this problem from my mother!  So instead of napkins in my drawer they are hanging on my wall!

Now, let's get going with this easy peasy diy...

Here's what you will need...

a canvas or two... or 10  ( mine was 12 x 12" to fit in the chippy frames)
Mod Podge
decorative cocktail napkins

I made both Art Tiles for less than $6.00!

1. Separate the ply of the napkin. You only want to use the top layer that has the design on it.

2. Tear the napkin. I tore some of  the blue area and some flowers. I used several napkins to make each tile. You don't have to use all of the napkin, only the parts you want.

3. Using a foam brush, apply a very thin layer of Mod Podge. Don't go overboard! Very very thin!

Lay down the napkin and press gently on to the cavas. Brush another very thin layer of Mod Podge over the napkin layer. If it tears a little don't worry just try to stick it back together.

4. Continue tearing and pasting.

5. I used the flowers in the napkins to make a pattern of a profusion of blooms.

6. Don't forget to wrap the pattern around the edges of the art tile.

Once the Art Tile is dry it is ready to hang!

So easy!!!!

I can think of so many ways to use these Art tiles... how about you?

Let's share ideas!

5 QUESTIONS YOU ASKED STONEGABLE

I get lots and lots of questions about StoneGable each week.
And many of the same ones keep popping up!

Here are 5 questions that StoneGable readers want to know and my answers...

1. Who makes are your leaf and berry dishes and where did you get them?

bottom and second to the bottom dishes

This is probably the most asked question by StoneGable readers. I have answered it a hundred times but never in a post.

The dishes I call my leaf and berry dishes are really olive branch dishes. When I first got them I thought the fruit was a berry. But upon closer inspection, I found that they were olives!

I have no idea the maker of my beloved dishes other than this marking on the back...

* UPDATE...

One of my wonderful readers, Cindee, emailed me with the maker and pattern of these favorite dishes

They are HOLIDAY BOUGH from BARREVELD.

Thanks so much, Cindee!

AND...

they are not olives and branches. They are "embossed holy and berries" according to the manufacturer.

The second most frequently asked about dishes are the other dishes in the picture above.

They are made by the same illusive manufacturer!

These dishes came from HomeGoods.

2. What are your kitchen counter tops and sink made of?

Our counter tops and kitchen sink are soapstone. It is a very durable, inert, natural stone. It does not stain, is not effected by hot and cold and is a breeze to take care of.

I chose soapstone slabs that had a minimum of veining. Some slabs can be very busy!

I had wanted soapstone counters for a long, long time... so when we updated our kitchen it was on our "list"!

I clean them with soap and water and to keep them black and shiny I wipe them down with mineral oil about once a month.

3. What are you paint colors?

The kitchen, living room, dining room, family room foyer and stair walls are all Benjamin Moore SONNET.

It is a very neutral and light off white/light bone color.

All the trim and kitchen cabinets in our home are painted Benjamin Moore ATRIUM WHITE.

And while we are on the subject of paint color, I often get asked...

What color is your front door?

The short answer is... I don't know!

It was supposed to be a dark slate grey/almost black, but it must have been mixed wrong. When we (and when I say "we" I mean Bobby) started to paint it I immediately knew it was a mistake. But a happy one! I love the color! It works well with our Pennsylvania limestone. I just hope I can match it as the door needs some touch up this spring.

4. Why don't you show your bathrooms, do you think it is too personal?

It's not that I won't share my bathrooms with my readers... but we have not updated any of them yet. StoneGable has 5 bathrooms. No one needs 5 bathrooms, believe me!

The main hall bathroom upstairs and one of the downstairs powder rooms hopefully will be updated before the end of the year.

We were going to gut the master bathroom and totally redo it, but we opted to build a new patio this spring instead. The bathroom will have to wait another year!

The bathrooms aren't awful... they just are not updated. And this blog is all about the diy's of updating rooms and decorating!

I'll show them to you as soon as they are done!

5.  Where do you keep all of your dishes?

I don't have as many as you think! I use the same ones over and over!

Here are two posts that show where the majority of my dishes are kept...

and...

There you have it! I hope this post answers some of your questions about StoneGable.

Please feel free to email me with any questions you  have and I'll do my best to answer them.

BRINGING FRIENDS TO THE THRONE OF GRACE

 Ancient home in Israel

What do you do when illness or tragedy or troubles or anxiety or difficulties strike someone you know?

It could be friend, or family member or even a person you hear about!

Let me tell you a story about a man with a debilitating illness and how his friends helped him in a time of his great need...

This story struck me deep in my heart when I first read about it years ago and to this day it is still on my mind...

Our story takes place in Capernaum, a town right on the seashore of the sea of Galilee. A town that was the home base of Jesus during his three year ministry.

Jesus, by the time of this story, had reached rock star status in all of Israel and surrounding areas for his healing and teaching.

On one particular day, he was at the home of Peter and a great, huge crowd had gathered. Jesus was inside "speaking the word".

While Jesus was preaching four men came to the house bringing their paralyzed friend on a pallet.

Upon arriving at the house they couldn't get close to the door, because of the great crowds that came to hear Jesus.
What happened next was astonishing! Those four men were not deterred by the crowds.

Listen to what they did...

And being unable to get to Him (Jesus) because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. Mark 2:4

Can you just see it?  Can you see these men scrambling up onto the roof of this ancient, seaside home.

The roof was probably made of a cross section of rough timber beams covered with a thick coating of mud plaster. Grass would actually grow on the top of the roof. The roofs were sturdy enough that people would sleep on then and also worship there.

I wonder if Jesus and the multitudes inside could hear all the commotion above as the men dissembled the roof ? As the men dug the dried mud with their hands to make an opening large enough for a man and his pallet to be lowered through it did much of the debris fall on Jesus and the people inside?  What was the reaction of the all the people?

I love to think of bible stories and their real life details!

Because of the tenacious action of the four men the paralytic had his audience with Jesus and was healed! And because of the healing, the once paralyzed man walked away praising God!

What an amazing story!

But here is what touches me so deeply... these men carried their friend in need to the only One who could do something about his condition. They brought their paralyzed friend to Jesus.

Every time I pray for someone... a friend, a precious family member or just someone in need that I hear about... I am carrying them to Jesus also! I can so relate to the men who dug through that mud roof to get to Jesus.

It is a privilege to carry someone, by intercessory prayer, to the Throne of Grace!

Hebrews 4: 14-16 says...

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son Of God, let us hold fast to our confession.

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

LET US THEREFORE, COME BOLDLY TO THE THRONE OF OUR GRACIOUS GOD THAT WE MAY FIND MERCY AND GRACE IN OUR TIME OF NEED.

I think what the men did for their parlayed friend was very bold!

And James 5:16 says...

Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayers of a righteous man can accomplish much.

Talking to God about others in need is biggest and best thing we can do for them! Pray and continue to pray. Visually see yourself on top of that roof, digging away the mud so you can lower your friend, or precious family member or someone in need carefully down to lovingly place them at the feet of Jesus! And keep doing it!

Don't give up!!! What if the friends of the paralyzed man stopped taking him to Jesus because they could not get near the door? The man would have never been healed! They would let nothing stop them... not the crowds, not the roof, nothing!

Don't underestimate the power of prayer... your prayer and the faith you have in the ONE you are praying to can literally move mountains! Believe in Jesus... the Healer... the Son of God... and His miracle ability! Look for His hand in the situation you are praying about. Expect miracles!!! It may not be the miracle you want, but He is faithful to answer prayer in His perfect way! Trust that... trust Him!

Who are you bringing to Jesus on a pallet today?

Thank you to all the many many people who carried me to the Throne of Grace during my long illness. I literally felt your prayers through God's constancy in my time of trouble!

I am feeling very much my old self! What a blessing you! Thank you for so much. May God bless you as you have blessed me!

CHIPPY PICTURES IN THE DINING ROOM

It took awhile, but I finally filled the chippy frames in the dining room.

I literally had hundreds of great suggestions and I thank everyone so very much for all your creative ideas.

I settled on making something for the frames myself. This was one of the most fun projects I have done in a long time!

Here is what the frames looked like before I filled them...

And here is how they look now...

These beautiful, well made frames came from OLD LUCKETT'S STORE. A wonderful place to buy all things interesting and chippy!

Can you guess what I did to fill them?

Here are the supplies I used to make the canvas squares...

I chose to design a pattern that would work for spring and summer.

This project was just so easy and inexpensive to do that I can make other art squares for different seasons.

The blue bring some much needed soft color to the dining room and picks up the same color in the carpet.

The brown, sepia ,white and ivory  work well with the frame.

I wrapped the image around the sides of the canvas... it's the little details that make a picture look "finished".

I wish you could see the detail in real life. The crinkles and bumps give it a hand painted look.

Really, very deceiving!

Here's how they look in my dining room with the morning light streaming in the windows...

Next week I'll share how you can make these easy art squares too!
